Durham Parks and Recreation was approached by representatives of Duke Park Neighborhood Association in 2015, about the wish for a small dog park within Duke Park. DPR agreed that this amenity would be suitable for the area where the park caretaker’s house had formerly been. This dog park will be similar in size to the Downtown Dog Park. The Duke Park Neighborhood Association will assume some maintenance responsibility for the dog park, similar to the services provided by the Cleveland Holloway Street Neighborhood at the Downtown Dog Park.
In July 2016, Durham Parks Foundation learned of a grant opportunity from PetSafe Brand for the purpose of building dog parks and submitted an application for the development of a dog park at Duke Park. PetSafe announced Durham as a recipient of a $25,000 award in late August!
Below is a conceptual plan of the planned dog park. Look here for updates on the construction timeline.
